Condition guide

Addiction and Recovery

Not a choice. Not a failure. A condition that changes the brain, and can be treated.

What is it, really?

Addiction is a chronic brain disorder characterised by compulsive substance use or behaviour despite harmful consequences. It is not a moral failing or a lack of willpower. Changes in the brain reward, motivation and memory systems make stopping genuinely difficult without support. Recovery is possible, and for many people, the journey toward it is one of the most courageous things a human being can do.

What you can do right now

  • Understand that addiction is a medical condition, not a character flaw
  • Avoid ultimatums and shame — support without judgment is more likely to help than pressure or blame
  • Learn about harm reduction: practical, non-judgmental steps that keep someone safer even before they're ready to stop — these approaches save lives
  • Encourage connection with a specialist or support group
  • Take care of yourself too: supporting someone in active addiction is exhausting
