Condition guide

Schizophrenia

A condition that changes perception, not a reflection of character or intelligence.

What is it, really?

Schizophrenia is a serious mental health condition that affects how a person thinks, feels and behaves. It can involve hallucinations, delusions and disorganised thinking. With the right support and treatment, many people with schizophrenia live meaningful lives.

What you can do right now

  • →Stay calm and consistent
  • →Do not argue with or try to disprove hallucinations or delusions
  • →Support them in taking medication as prescribed, without taking over
  • →Learn the early warning signs of an episode
  • →Encourage connection with a trusted clinician

The first month after diagnosis

This isn't a schedule to keep up with. It's what usually helps, week by week, for families going through this.

Week 1

Right now

A first episode is often frightening for everyone involved, including the person experiencing it. Safety and stabilization come before understanding.

  • ·If there's any immediate risk to safety, that comes before anything else. Sentio's Crisis page has steps and numbers.
  • ·Treatment, even started suddenly, is a real step forward, not a defeat.
  • ·This is not caused by anything you did as a parent, partner, or family member.

Week 2

What this means day to day

Hallucinations and delusions feel completely real to the person experiencing them. Arguing about what is real rarely helps.

  • ·Stay calm and consistent rather than trying to disprove what they are experiencing.
  • ·Notice what seems to make things calmer or more difficult, without expecting a pattern yet.
  • ·This is a medical condition affecting perception, not a reflection of character or intelligence.

Week 3

First steps

Staying connected to treatment matters more in these early weeks than almost anything else.

  • ·Support taking medication as prescribed, without taking over entirely.
  • ·Start learning the early warning signs of an episode. Sentio’s My Signs Plan can help write these down together.
  • ·Build one steady relationship with a trusted clinician, rather than switching between many.

Week 4

Taking stock

A month in, stability, not a return to how things were before, is the realistic marker of progress.

  • ·Notice whether the early warning signs plan is actually being used, not just written.
  • ·Check how the rest of the family is doing. This affects everyone in the house.
  • ·Treatment adjustment is normal and expected in these first months, not a sign of failure.
